Winter Percussion 2010 - announcement and schedule

November 17, 2009
Greetings, parents of the 2010 Winter Percussion participants! Our 2010
schedule is attached; there will be minor changes as the season progresses.

The AB Winter Percussion Program begins Tuesday December 1st, 5:30 to 9 PM
in the band room. We will be using the lower gym most Tuesday nights from 6
to 8:30 PM; we will start at 5:30 to move equipment and warm-up before 6 PM.
We will store our equipment beginning at 8:30; students will be dismissed by
9 PM.

What is the "Winter Percussion Program"? Simply, it's the marching band
without the wind instruments and color guard; it features all percussion
instruments including electric pianos and synthesizers. Instead of marching
on a football field we use a gymnasium floor.

Items important for student safety:

  1. Earplugs - with many percussionists in a confined space can damage
our students' hearing. If your child does not have ear protection, CVS
sells simple (and cheap!) earplugs that can really make a difference!
(Larry has extras just in case.)
  2. Footwear - its critical students come to rehearsal with supportive
footwear: athletic shoes with lateral support or even band marching
shoes are best. At the very minimum, all students should wear a good
    pair of sneakers during practice.

As we progress into the season, we will need parent volunteers to chaperone
all of the winter percussion events. The latest schedule will be posted on this page (see Program Schedule link at right).

Per school system requirements, all chaperones must have a valid CORI filed
with ABRHS. If you'd like to come along and help us, please let us know if
you have questions about the CORI requirement.

The Program is always looking for parent volunteers for tasks such as:

  • Drivers for the equipment truck.
  • Working with the equipment is the BIGGEST volunteer commitment for
the Winter Percussion group; moving instruments from the truck to warm-up
areas then to the performance area, then back on the truck is always
    a challenge.
  • We need a volunteer or two that is good with tools and is willing to
spend a few Tuesday nights repairing our equipment.
  • Helpers are needed to design and create props and costumes for the
program. You don't need to be artistic to help.

We look forward to talking with all of you throughout the Winter Percussion
season, and to working with you!
